A rectangle is not necessarily redaction
Drawing a black shape over text may only cover the visible page. The text can remain underneath and may be revealed by selecting, copying, changing layers, or extracting document content.
The same problem can occur when screenshots are pasted over PDF pages without flattening the final file.
Use a true apply-redaction workflow
Professional PDF tools distinguish marking content for redaction from applying the redaction. The apply step removes the underlying objects and creates the final appearance.
Work on a copy and save a separate final file. Do not distribute the editable source with pending redaction marks.
Sanitize hidden document content
Comments, attachments, form fields, bookmarks, metadata, hidden layers, scripts, and previous revisions can expose information outside the visible page.
Use the sanitization features of an approved tool and inspect document properties after saving.
Test like a recipient or attacker
Search for the redacted terms, drag across the area, copy and paste into a text editor, use another PDF viewer, inspect attachments, and run approved extraction tools when the risk warrants it.
For legal, medical, financial, or regulated records, follow a documented redaction review process with a second reviewer.
